Following the approval of MPs, a new coronavirus tiers system has been introduced in England, replacing the national lockdown introduced on 5 November 2020.
Regions of England will be split into three tiers of restrictions:
- Tier 1: Medium alert
- Tier 2: High alert
- Tier 3: Very High alert
The new tiers have been strengthened compared to the previous tiers introduced earlier in the year in order to prevent a return to growing infections.
While more than 55 millions of people will be under stricter restrictions in Tier 2 or Tier 3, just one per cent of England’s population will enter the lowest restrictions tier.
Prime Minister Boris Johnson said that the new measures aimed to “drive down" Covid-19 until a vaccine is available.
The new system comes as the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) says that Pfizer/BioNTech coronavirus vaccine is safe to roll out from early December, making the UK the first country to approve the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine for widespread use.
The first review of the tiers will take place on December 16, and every 14 days from that date.
